(Day 6, Walt Disney World Vacation)
Just some random Disney musings today...
Some things I’ve overheard this week while at WDW:
I, for one, DO NOT want to go home.

Just some random Disney musings today...
- If EPCOT is an acronym (which stands for “Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow” for the three or four people on Earth who have not been to WDW), then shouldn't it always be written in ALL CAP letters? Well, then why is the gigantic sign attached to Spaceship Earth (AKA the “big ball”) written in Caps/Lowercase? (I.E. Epcot instead of EPCOT.)
- How does Disney inspire its cast members to be so nice? Is it just that nice people are attracted to working at Disney? Does the Disney “Traditions” training (their intro to corporate culture, otherwise known to the rest of the universe as employee orientation) really work? Or is there something stepfordy in the water here? Collectively they have to be the nicest people on Earth.
- If I could add one country to EPCOT’s World Showcase, it would be Greece. The centerpiece would be a replica of the Parthenon. There would be a Greek taverna (similar to the U.K.’s pub) that would have great Greek food, like hummus and souvlaki and Greek salad. And the waitresses would light the Kasseri cheese on fire and everybody would yell “OPA!” There would be shops that remind you of La Plaka, the shopping/eating area surrounding the Parthenon in Athens.
- Why is so utterly annoying to be forced to listen to other people’s cell phone conversations? If you were sitting at the pool or eating at a restaurant and two people were having a conversation, you would not be annoyed at all (usually). But make that a single person having a conversation on a cell phone and you probably find it truly irritating. Perhaps it has something to do with volume. People on cell phones seem to talk way louder than necessary. I think it’s because most of us are either still fascinated that the damn things actually work, or frustrated that the signals can be so bad. (Note to NEXTEL: I can't hear you so well from here!)
- According to the cartoons on the Disney Channel, and personal appearances here at WDW, Goofy has a son. Who is the boy’s mother? And is the boy a puppy or a calf?
Some things I’ve overheard this week while at WDW:
- Woman to small group of fellow travelers who wanted to explore China at EPCOT’s World Showcase: “I’m not really much of a China person, sorry.”
- One guy to another at Arial’s Grotto in the Magic Kingdom: “Look! Goofy has a gut. I’ve never seen a Goofy with a gut.”
- Man in pool, shouting at the top of his lungs to a woman sitting ten feet from him: “Hey hon’, shuddap, will ya? This is the QUIET pool. ” (Maniacal laughing follows.)
- Woman to a bus driver behind the wheel of a bus clearly marked Downtown Disney: “Does this bus go to the Magic Kingdom?”
- Small boy in PhilharMagic audience about 30 seconds into the show: “I want to GO HOME! I want to GO HOME! Mommy, I want to GO HOME!”
I, for one, DO NOT want to go home.
